I would stop buying from China, and all the other Asians countries.
Maybe the people would stop the corruption and they would leave better.
Manufacture it locally I won't mind to pay more.
If we don't stop it now will be too late.
I try to buy made in Europe but is getting very difficult.

Because all human beings are interdependent, the decisions we in the West make can have huge consequences for people in the East.

I am not in favour of sweatshop labour, but if the factories are forced to close the income of many poor families in the area would be seriously affected from the loss of the tiny sums they make from the sweatshops and their lives could be made worse.

For every action there is a reaction, and boycotting sweatshop could either have a positive or negitive effect.

No. Personally, I couldn't care less where the product comes from and how its made. If it costs significantly less than another product, and is of comparable quality, I will likely buy it.

Then again, most of the crap that comes out of sweatshops I have no need for. I don't believe agreeing or refusing to buy cheap chinese merchandise will lead to any change in my employment status.

The onus is on the chinese government to alleviate poor working conditions and stop the exploitation of the poor. If they don't care about their people, those people should change the government to one which would take care of them.

Just to be patriotic and try to help keep jobs in America, I do try to buy American--but seems everything I turn over says: Made in China! Even the most odd lil things, just everything seems to be made there lol..

I own a chevy, but I'm almost afraid to look under it--it might say: Made in China!

I would rather pay much more for the product and keep the jobs in the country.Greedy corporations don't care that the economy is hurt by exporting jobs to other countries. They have no moral ethics and the mighty dollar is the bottom line. The Chinese people need unions so that they get proper wages like people in other countries. If we pay more for our products and the money goes towards higher wages in China, then it is a win win situation for both cultures.

    JAMMco... its complicated...

If I didn't buy it who would? I wouldn't want to be responsible for shutting down that sweatshop in China and putting that poor child out of a job, and no longer able to support his/her mom and dad. They would then be forced to sell him/her to a brothel... and I will not perpetuate that kind of behavior.

I'm kidding about all that... my point is that we cannot assume that we can instill social change by boycotting a product that is produced in another country. It's bought and paid for before we ever take it off the shelves.

Changes that would effect this kind of behavior has to come from the government that allows it to happen. The victims can't always defend themselves, those in charge of protecting them should protect them.

No, I don't. I used to, but the economic situation is such that investment in China will eventually raise the standard of living and the wages there. Thus, I agree with where this will lead, and accept the current situation as a "growing pain". I feel the same way about off-shoring to India, etc.

Most products from developing nations are made in sweat shops and America has been shipping out jobs for decades.

Frankly I think history dropped the ball when they abandoned the "Fortress America" concept.

  • Neither. Americans will place personal self interest above all else, and save each penny that they can in sating their endless need for merchandise. They won't really worry about it until the unemployment checks stop coming.

Yes. I would definitely stop buying stuff made in China. The main reasons are because of their human rights violations and their cruelty to animals. Watch out for fur or even fake fur made in China. Most likely it is made from dog and cat fur.
Made in China has destroyed America. Why should we make their economy strong when ours is failing. I have no desire to travel there. I don't want to help their economy with my tourism. I really hope that made in the USA will become the norm.

Sweatshops are just a small part of the issue, it's definitely not a growing trend, in fact it is shrinking. Chinese are earning a lot more today than they were a few years ago, their economy is booming. They are becoming wealthier at our expense by supplying us with sub-standard products (being a business owner, I have a number of self learned expensive examples of this ever increasing problematic trend).
And yes, not everyone in America can be a lawyer, engineer, doctor, politician, etc. Many people are plain old run of the mill and just need regular jobs, we need these people also. Like jobs in the manufacturing industry that is ultimately responsible for spurring innovation, better products and maintaining technological leadership. By continuing with the current trend we are crippling our ability to be on the technological leading edge. If it continues this way, it's only a matter of time and China will be the new technological powerhouse. I don't know about you, but based on their current political status including their affiliation with the likes of Iran, I am not comfortable with that idea. Or, I guess for those who could care less, perhaps they're learning Cantonese or Mandarin as we speak and planning to flee when the going gets tough!!

i know American has helped a lot of nations since WW2.
so many that it become uncountable that is why used a lot and not many. you save the china ass from the japanese imperial army and for that, thank you. today china has a billion people. NOT MANY... A LOT of people. america, a population of 250 millions. do you think you can help us with a population of a billion and over. yes American help Chinese by buying china products so that Chinese do not have to sell their girls to bother and male to factory with despicable working life and environment. with a billions population do you think you American can fully and totally eradicate property and human trafficking in china.

there is a point where the helper need help
    and
there is a point where the helper need to understand and know their limit

thank you American for being benevolent and a good brother of the world.
