It depends on the business and the company; and on the posted job offer. If you could apply via email, then do so. If not - or you find a sentence like"send your complete application at...", then by ordinary mail. An other tipp: Be careful with companies which ask for a handwriten CV. Such companies make graphological expert reports.

some jobs only take online applications (Marriott, Target) once i applied online at about 2:00 am and received a call the next morning, they had been pleasantly surprised to find my application (7 years experience in my field)

I have found the internet is just fine, in my profession, IT, most jobs are listed on the internet, it's finding the businesses that's hard, but I still use a quick flick through the phone book to get ideas for searching for websites and obtaining contact details. Most companies list their vacancies these days. I suppose it depends on what position you are applying for. Good Luck
