Some crimes are very low key and friendly but they either take your money at gun point or do it with a pen or computer. Others involve bodily harm and are violent but usually involve removing your money forcefully, raping, beating to try to teach someone a lesson, etc. Others are against persons of another race or religion, or both, and the only reason for the crime is hate. Oh, they may rob you after the fact, but that wasn't the real reason for the attack.

Not all violent crimes are because of hate, for example a man who rapes a woman does not necessarily do it because he hates women he does it because of opportunity and the power that it gives him, or a person may violently robs a bank and kills someone, again this is not because of hate but because he/she wants money and they do not care how or who they hurt to get it. A hate crime is different because it is any criminal offence committed against a person or property that is motivated by the offender's hatred of someone because of their race, colour, ethnic or national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
