Haha you could try rubbing them all over with an open lemon that is a failsafe way of getting rid of lingering odors on objects and perfect for leather. If it is bacteria/microbes causing the problem it is important to ensure the boots are allowed to dry out completely on a frequent basis as you know microbes thrive in warm and moist places like footware.
-
baking soda or baby powder thats what i use in my sisters shoes and you cant be in the same room as her if she just took her shoes off

Baking soda and put them outside for a while.

Make him wash his feet three times a day and use different foot wear each day! Throw the old ones out and buy new footwear! New socks twice a day might be in order as well! Tell him to stop being so damn cheap when it comes to foot care, because no one wants to smell that stench! A continuing dose of anti-fungal powder and spray would certainly help!

I have used Baking Soda for that exact problem and it did work for the shoes I was trying to fix. I used a pretty large amount in each boot. Maybe 1/2 box to each boot, stuck them in a large plastic garbage bag tied shut and every now and again open the bag and swished the boot so the baking soda would move around a bit. Within a couple days they were fine. Then I got the odor eaters and put them in and they worked good as well. +5 hope it helps It is said that putting small containers around a room where there is smoke can absorb the smoke smell in the room. So it really should work for you.

Advice I was given helped me in the passed, never wear a wet boot (sweat or other substances like rain). Main advice to avoid smells with footwear is having more then one pair of shoes/boots and switch them daily (more often if you sweat a lot) that way it gives the boots time to dry from the swet. Feet should always be washed everyday is obvious advice to avoid odours. Getting rid of odours would mostly work if you know exactly what's causing the odour. If they aren't steel toe (or other form of work boot with extra protection) your best bet is in the laundry and dryer (or air dry) some people recommend baking soda before laundry. Keep in mind if it is a work boot with steel toe it can damage your washer and dryer. Recently I bought a pair of work boots and for some reason they started to smell like vinegar but not sure why, I'm trying to decide if this is a good smell to come from a boot or not lol

Mix one part apple cider vinegar with two parts water treat the feet and the boots pull out the laces and the tongue to make sure they dry thoroughly get a second pair of boots alternate them they will last as long as 3 pair.

6-9-2017 First, you have to get the boots dry, and get them dry again after every time he wears them. Roll up a page of newspaper and insert it into each boot, all the way to the toe, and leave it over night. It does not have to be stuffed tight. Next you want to kill the bacteria. Almost anything will do that if the boots are dry. Work some foot powder into his socks. Everybody keeps saying baking soda. Tests do not give good indications for the claims of absorbing odors, but at least that is not going to cause damage. Experiment.
