I have a country style dinning room in my house which has a light tan above a chair guard and a darker tan below it. I assume that you mean your kitchen and living room at attached together. I would though, make sure you can distinguish the two different areas though, which is possible even if you paint both rooms the same color. Try giving one room a certain color theme with the tan/beige and the other room a different one. This way you can separate the two completely different living spaces. First, I would work your living room first, rather than doing both rooms at once. I would look at the color scheme of the pieces you already, such as your couch, storage, end tables etc. Then base the room off that if there is a theme going on. Usually, black and white go along with every color. Though, I'm not sure how a red would go with tan unless it were a burgundy red, or a heather-ed one since tan is a dull, light color. I would get a very dark cherry stained pieces. It will bring out the red color that you wanted and it incorporates the darker black pieces that you may want. I would get black picture frames for any pictures you may have, and if you have none, I would get black and whites or red based ones to go with your color scheme. You're kitchen's second color should be based on the color of your plates/bowls/etc. This way, everything seems to go. There really isn't much you can change about your kitchen without paying for a whole kitchen renovation. For the storage part of your question, I'm not sure if you mean for the kitchen/living room or just in general. Storage in the kitchen is fairly hard, since it's hard to neatly incorporate more cabinets without them looking oddly out of place. Try storing larger bowls and things you may not use often enough, and store them in the space above your cabinets (if there is a space of course). If there is an open wall space, I would build a single shelf that may just seem like a board sticking out from your wall, and I would place decorative, color coordinated plates or bowls on there. Corner china cabinets are cool too cause sometimes they just seem to not be noticeable and can store more than just china. Living room storage is always fun. I got a media bookcase at wal*mart that stands about 4 feet tall and about 2 feet wide for about $30. It's got a black finish, but if you get the natural wood color, you could stain it. I would use those to hold your books, CDs and movies you may be trying to store somewhere else. An well-equipped entertainment center is always good because it can not only hold your TV and media things, but it can hold stereo systems and DVD/VHS players. Storage in the bedroom is easy. Basically, bookshelves and closets are you're best friends. Even if you have a lot of clothes in your closet, it's easy to place may different things in boxes below or beneath them and large sized shoe hangers (the large cubby ones) that hang from the bar in your closet work well to hold anything from summer clothes to sheet sets. Depending on the color of your bedroom, you could get traditional file cabinets, or the plastic dorm-like ones. I would keep going but I have a feeling i'm rambling, anything else just ask. =]
