Why was the death penalty abolished?

Has capital punishment been abolished in all countries? In India it still exists. Death by hanging. I think the 'electric chair' continues to exist in the US too. I am against capital punishment. I believe that criminals should be given the rest of their lives to repent and reform. Putting and end to their lives deprives them of this opportunity. I also believe capital punishment is nothing but legal murder.

It hasn't been abolished in the US. It is up to the individual states whether it remains on the books as a punishment. Here in New York, they have legalized the death penalty as punishment in capital murder cases, but have not executed anyone since it was reinstated. Texas on the other hand - I think they execute people for shoplifting (just kidding).
