It's a racist phrase used to imply that black people are primitive savages who still throw spears at each other. As well as being just downright idiotic in itself, it fails to see the implicit irony in the idea that somehow shooting each other with guns and blowing each other up with bombs is less savage than being impaled by a spear.

I've heard that before - extremely old fashioned and racist and ignorant, and if its said in this day and age it can only be a deliberate attempt to be nasty. Go Google Zulu. That's the impression.

Just so you all know, I really do love black people. I have no problem with people because of their color skin. Diversity is preferable and I think that everyone should be proud of their roots. Some of the greatest musicians of all time happen to be black.

Because "they" are ignorant *sses? I think it came off of the movie stereotypes (African blacks were portrayed almost always with spears in movies up to the 1960's). It evolved into this very bigoted slur.

Dang, I have been married to a black man for 26 years and I am 56 and I have never heard that expression before.

They do? Wow. Not many spears where I live but there are plenty of black people. Hold on for a few minutes and I'll go ask one of them why they are called that.

That is an old expression which was once greatly used I remember from my youth, It was odd since they called me Geronimo. Anyway Racism is still alive and well it has just been driven under ground and sometimes causes people to stroke out.. . To your question this was a term defining Black people as low tech. hunters or savages AKA as spear Chuckers. Anyway that is what it means or implies I recall worse expressions now and even when I was younger a dawn of the dead type situation with Whites chasing a black man down the street, just the opposite of today.. . My 2 cents adjusted for inflation.
