  • Before I started reading The Bell Jar I thought it was going to be loosely based off Sylvia Plath’s experience, but as I continued to read, I realized that it was basically her autobiography, with a few minor differences such as the names and places. Esther’s father’s death when she’s young, her experience at college of not fitting in, failed suicide attempts etc. I related to it because like Esther, I could never be a wild, outspoken person like Doreen, but I’m definitely not a perky, conventional Betsy type either. Don’t get me wrong, I like Sylvia Plath’s poetry, but I didn’t get really sucked into the book. It was a little too depressing to be entertaining for me personally.
