Why are places that provide tattoos, called 'tattoo parlours (parlors)?' Why not tattoo joints or salons or shops or anything else?

i think parlors sounds beter then a tattoo joint i would raters go to a parlor then a joint to get mine done

I looked up parlour and it says "A parlour is used in the names of some types of shops which provide a service, rather then selling things"

I often call them shops, and I've even heard salons. I think SkateAround put it best, tattoo parlors or beauty parlors or massage parlors. It has the connotation of somewhere that you pamper your body somehow.
