Yes, I would put on my old ratty jeans and make popcorn and settle in to watch a movie and let him go out by himself. If after 24 years of marriage he wants to decide how I should dress when we go out then I just won't go.

Yes! I wouldn't have put that much effort into it so no feelings to hurt, plus my partner has a very gentle and inoffensive way of 'objecting', and the important thing is to go out with someone relaxed and happy, otherwise the whole night is going to be a misery from the outset.
