  • It depends on what you eat. For real, it depends. Sugar, like candy, hits your blood fast, your bg (blood glucose level) immediately peaks, then fairly quickly drops. Fruit and vegetables can hit the blood close to immediately, then tapers off more slowly. (Making these good to eat.) Complex carbohydrates, like starches (bread, potatoes, etc.) raise blood glucose levels more slowly and also stay in the blood longer. Meats, fats, proteins take as long as 15 hours or so to raise your blood sugar and those taper off very slowly, like within a day or two. If you're having a low BG moment, grab a hard candy or some orange juice for quick release of glucose. If you're trying to control your BG level, eat a combination of these foods, staying away from fats as much as you can. You do want some fast acting foods, and then foods that stay in your blood longer, for a more constant BG level. For a healthy diabetic diet, the easiest way is to count the carbs. Keep your carb intake down to around or below 45g a day. With non-carb items, like fruits, vegetables and meats, go for the non-fat vegetables, those are pretty much eat as much as you want foods. Balance your fruit intake throughout the day. Be very stingy with how much meat you eat, four to six ounces of meet is plenty a day. Oh and don't take my advice! I mean, it's good and it works for me well, but you need to go to a nutritionist to help you develop a plan that will work for you and your normal eating habits. And until you can get there, count the carbs until you reach 45, then stop eating them... stick to six or fewer ounces of meat, and load up on the non-fat veggies. and always remember and never forget... salsa is a free food. You can eat as much as you want!
