not sure if the dollar bills are made with the same paper material as the British pound, but if the note is not a fake then the pen leaves NO mark at all, it should only create a mark if it is fake, and so as such you wouldn't want to get one of them back!

The pen they are using has a special ink that responds to the fabric used in money if it is real the line will fade while if it is fake it will stay and show up as a dark brown or black line...

I have gotten back $20 bills with the mark on it. I can't answer your question. I don't usually deal in giving a cashier $100, so I wouldn't have a clue where they go..maybe on vacation somewhere nice with all the other $100 bills? Happy Monday! :)

Counterfeit pens are designed to leave a mark on counterfeit bills, not real ones.

i have gotten several back. but if they do go somewere they would go to the federal bank to be taken out of circulation.
