An expression I have heard a lot on U.S. T.V. shows is "Jonesing" which I gather to mean wanting or yearning for something where did this originate?

" Keeping up with the Jones' " meant to buy something better than your friends or neighbors and constantly competing for stature. example: If the neighbor has a boat, you go buy a boat even though you never thought about boating before, then if they buy a bigger boat, so do you. If the kids wear name brand clothes, then you buy your kids expensive name brands, just to keep up with the Jones'. To prove you make as much money as they do. They=the Jones' could be any name, just common saying. Jonesing could mean to buy things just to have the same or better as "them" rather than needing the items.
