  • It's more polite than ordering someone to "do this!" But I think it's less polite than "please..."
  • I agree with anguilla, but I have to add that it may be more polite to say "please" in most instances unless it can be construed as harassment/creepiness. If the doctor says, "Please spread your legs", it could definitely be taken the wrong way. But if he/she says "I need you to spread your legs" it tells the patient that this isn't an order or a request - the doctor is merely telling you what he/she needs to be done in order to do their job accurtately.
  • That is what they are taught to say so it won't sound like they are ordering you around, and so it will sound a little more friendly.
