When you go to a doctor's office or hospital, why is everything you are asked to do prefaced with the phrase "I need you to ..."?

It's more polite than ordering someone to "do this!" But I think it's less polite than "please..."

I agree with anguilla, but I have to add that it may be more polite to say "please" in most instances unless it can be construed as harassment/creepiness. If the doctor says, "Please spread your legs", it could definitely be taken the wrong way. But if he/she says "I need you to spread your legs" it tells the patient that this isn't an order or a request - the doctor is merely telling you what he/she needs to be done in order to do their job accurtately.

That is what they are taught to say so it won't sound like they are ordering you around, and so it will sound a little more friendly.
