In a long, fairly narrow, light coloured room, do you think stripy wallpaper would look better vertical or horizontal? (just on one long wall)

Neither and certainly not vertical it would make the room look higher and narrower

Continuing FB's thought... and horizontal would make the room look narrow and claustrophobic. Actually, a couple of pictures on the wall can give the appearance of being shorter and less narrow. A series of mirrors or pictures to give the illusion of width along the shorter wall instead may be an option you'd like.
