I really like solar, but there are a lot of issues with it that need to be overcome. First off, the cells are expensive and inefficient. This is slowly changing, and as they become more popular and better methods are discovered it will slowly be fixed. It should be possible to put lots of solar panels on roofs and basically any place that the sun shines that isn't used, however that brings up a second issue: Where will the power come from in the winter if you live in a climate with snow? You'd not only have to shovel your walk, you'd have to shovel your solar cells as well. Not a show stopper, but annoying. Of more concern would be the cost of the damage if a large hail storm passed through. How do you keep the solar cells from being damaged, while still allowing them enough sunlight to do their job? Both problems that could be fixed. I just personally don't know the answer to them.

Nuclear is the leading contender. The only one currently available with known capacity to make any difference. Bio-fuel production is already causing more collateral damage than it is solving.
