Cats are carnivores. They are not omnivores. They are different from dogs. It means they get their primary nutritional needs from animals based proteins and only a tiny part of their diet from plant based proteins. Cats do not have the enzymes to digest grains and plant type products in their systems. They don't eat plants as a source of food they eat it like medicine or for it's effects. But cats are definitely carnivores, obligate carnivores.

Cats are not omnivores. They are true carnivores (eat only meat). When they eat plants, it is not as a food, it is as a digestive aid and chlorophyll helps digestive healing. If you have observed cats that eat grass, they do not eat it and retain it - give them 5-10 minutes and they will have vomited it up along with whatever was bothering them. Dogs also use grass this way, but they are actually omnivores and their health is best served by a diet of meat with the addition of steamed vegetables.

    I'll make this plain.

    Cats are carnivores.
Cats eat grasses to pass hair-balls.

For all carnivores, eating the intestines of primary consumers can provide any additional dietary requirements. If any. The reason they eat the intestines: carnivores have no enzymes to digest starchs.

Extraneous information: the domesticated cat has lost the gene sequences that make sweets desirable. Ever notice that your cat doesnt like sweets, but the dog does? Cats do not taste sweets.

Please, for the health of your cats and dogs. Feed them a diet rich in animal proteins. Satisfy their dietary requirements.

I always heard it was because their tummy hurts but the other explanations sound more like it!

I have two cute little cats and after we feed them in the morning we let them go outside. When they are outsie they go and chase insects and bugs in the grass. This makes them quite hyper and its soo funny. Then when they are lying in the grass they will start chewing on the grass. So i think they eat anything.

    Hope I Helped!

Cats are part omnivore. Most of the plants they eat they throw back up. They most likely aid in digesting food. Be sure not to let your cats eat anything out in the woods. As long you're sure your kitty's eating grass and clovers, there shouldn't be a problem. But if Kitty eats too many plants, it could possibly cause an intestinal blockage. Just keep an eye out.

You may look up answers to the question and see what pops up first says: cats are carnivorous. But what is a true carnivore? Eating only meat.

You can see that this is not true of all cats. The Domesticus felis (mine, in particularly) has an avid addiction to mint tea and begs for vegetables from off of my plate. He absolutely loves vegetables and eats them. I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian and ensure that I don't have meat products in my food--I am an herbivore.

The correct term for your cat is an omnivore.

I think domestic cats eat grass as they aren't getting any ruffage in their digestive system. Wild and/or feral cats obviously source this ruffage from fur and or other undigestable parts from the animals they consume (ed exoskeletons). Vitamins, they probably get plenty of what the require through consuming essential organs

hey, we're carnivores too, but we eat fruit and veggies! =). animals need nutrients that aren't in meat just like we do, so they turn to plants. also, when a cat eats grass it helps the cats' stomach digest. its less likely for a cat to vomit when it eats plants.
