Yes without question. Many students toward suffer from L-A-Z-Y more than ADD or ADHD. Don't get me wrong, it is a real disability, but most people are able to focus when they really want to and sometimes it is used simply as an excuse to justify one's behavior.

Undoubtedly. One of my children had childhood epilepsy and had to see a pediatric neurologist. It was his particular pet peeve that ADD is misdiagnosed...and most often by those who really have no idea how to diagnose it. He said it required neurological tests and not these "questionaires" that psychiatrists, psychologists and general practitioners use to diagnose it.
-
No....it is misunderstood and under diagnosed.
-
Yes!!! As a teacher, I think it is majorly over diagnosed. I even have co-workers who seem to think they are qualified to diagnose a child as ADD.
-
any disease for which there is a profit generating treatment is likely to result in overdiagnosis. adhd is easy to diagnose and many folks who only think they're qualified to diagnose it do so and the kids are made to suffer for the adults' stupidity.
-
I think the medication, may be over diagnosed.

Yes, definitely, some are just spoiled brats.

I remember reading that ADD is UNDER- diagnosed in adults. My doctor confirmed it. You will notice that those who shriek that ADD is over- diagnosed are the same folks who run around with their eyes bulging, waving their arms, and cackling like Chicken Little, "The government is trying to poison us by putting fluoride in the water!!!" <shriek> "The gummint wants to take our GUNS away!!! I don't vote, so I need GUNS to keep the gummint off my porch!!!" <shriek> "The doctors are trying to poison us by inoculating our kids with MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine!!!" <shriek> Remember the surgeon who started the fear campaign about MMR vaccinations, Dr. Andrew Wakefield? Turns out the auspicious Dr. Wakefield is a FRAUD. He's been caught. He fabricated his "study" to produce the results he wanted. Here are dozens of search results-- pick one. Or two. They're free: http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&um=1&ei=vCmTSb_hE4r2sAO4uKy0Cw&resnum=1&nolr=1&q=Andrew+Wakefield+MMR&btnG=Search+News This is the kind of "science" and "medical" advice the wacky right look for to support their loony-tunes beliefs.

Not sure about today, but I did research on on the ethical issues surrounding Ritalin in the 90's, and it was surprising that many parents pressured their pediatricians to prescribe Ritalin to their children thinking that it would make them smarter. As others have mentioned many elementary school teachers in the 90s wrongfully told parents and pediatricians that their problem students had ADD. It was found that these teachers had too many children in their classes and did not have the time or energy to give the over-active children the individual attention they needed. Because Ritalin is a controlled substance, children misdiagnosed with ADD who took Ritalin from elementary school until their early teens seemed to develop depression and bipolar disorders. Now this was only found to be a correlation. Hopefully things are much better now. As with all disorders that require drug treatment it is very important to have your doctor diagnose you. It is even better to get a second opinion with a specialist.
