Why do/did we use the term 'god awful' if god is mostly projected in a positive light?

"You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name." Any person who follows the Bible would not say such a phrase lightly.

cos with the current image (as in yr q.) something god thought was awful must be pretty much so!
