Why would some people be opposed to designer babies? What makes them think that it is any better to let nature continue to give people their undesirable features rather than to let compitent human beings deliberately give them favorable traits?

Because people would pick a limited set of qualities. We would end up with limited genetic diversity and the inability to fight off pandemics that crop up every so often. Letting nature take it's course makes our species strong and diverse enough to survive extremes.

The law of unintended consequences. You may think you are changing just one feature such as IQ but that may be on the same DNA strand as a less desirable feature. I'll use China to pose a question to you. China has limited couples to one child each and couples bearing a girl often give them up for adoption because they want boys. Now there are more boys growing up in China than girls. What happens when these boys want a wife? Law of unintended consequences.
