  • For most problems if you fix the problem the light will turn off on it's own. If you go to an Autozone parths store they will hook up an scan tool and tell you why the light is on for free! They can also "Clear Codes" and try to turn the light off, but if thre is still a problem the light will turn back on. One of the most common causes of a check engine light is a loose or bad gas cap. If the scan tool comes up with "large evap emissions leak" or something similar it is the gas cap. If you find it loose, refill the tank and tighten the cap. The light will go off after the fuel gage gets down to between 3/4 and full. Hope this helps
