Hold it in your mouth and light the tobacco. Once the tobacco is lit, suck on it. Use your cheeks, not your lungs; this means suck like you would from the straw inside of a full glass of soda, as opposed to how you suck on an empty glass of soda to get that last bit. Lastly, ignore the pipe and inhale the smoke that's in your mouth. Repeat as desired.
If the product in the pipe is a legal product (that is, wherever you're smoking it) that is NOT tobacco, then you'll want to hold the flame on the product as you suck (second version this time, not first). Keep flame on the product as you inhale until desired amount of smoke is inhaled.

When you first buy a wooden pide, you have to puff in it and let cool several times to temper the wood, usually you just puff on if and let the smoke circulate in your mouth, if you have a filtered pipe, change the filters whenever they're too dirty.
