Can an email be substituted for a hand written thank you note that is generally sent after a job interview?

Yes. It is fine. Just make sure that it does not come across as generic. Talk specifically about the job, why you are excited about it, and why your skills match the employer's need. Enthusiasm goes a long way in the job seeking process!

I would do both. Email shows you are computer savvy and hand written is more personable and shows your beautiful hand writing. *Note: If your handwriting sucks don't do it.

Only if your handwriting is such that you would be seen as a demented axe-murderer. Let everyone else send the tacky emails, which will just go into the e-trash anyway. Send a hand-written note. This has worked 99% of the time to get me asked back for another interview or to get the actual job.
