  • i don't think it is offensive;0)
  • Sure. I don't believe in a god, and when someone says it to me, I just say thanks. Unless they know I'm an atheist and they're trying to offend me (which never works!) by saying it.
  • Of course it is, unless you say it in a snarly way as if to say something about their beliefs. It's a kind word same as saying "wish you the best" or words to that effect, now who'd take offence to that?
  • i think its great. they are wishing a powerful being to them, to bless you. Im very Christian, and if a Buddhist or a Hindu came up to me and said, may buddah bless you or may allah, or who ever the hindu's believe in, then i would accept it.
  • Of course. Can you just imagine a world where someone sneezes and this ensues: "Sneeze" "Excuse me. What are your current religious beliefs?" "What?" "Your current religious beliefs? What are they? I'd like to give you the proper blessing for your sneeze. If you are Christian, I'll say God bless you. If you are Muslim, I'll say Inshallah. If you are Wiccan, I'll invoke the Goddess and wish you health. I don't want to offend anyone, so I'd just like to give you the proper PC greeting so I don't offend anyone." "Well, I'm an atheist, so I get offended with any such good wishes" "Oh, okay...to hell with you then." LOL
  • well you could be saying the same for "you're so gay" and other day to day phrases like that (of course i hear it day to day as its part of the teenage lingo, or as it seems!) I think its just something people are so used to saying normally, and sometimes the case so you don't really take them seriously, ironically :)
  • I'm atheist and people say it to me all the time. I often help people to do things and they very kindly say things like, "Thank you and God bless you." I smile, and say "You're welcome and and you too." I think it's kind and decent of them, even if I don't share their belief--and I'm fine with letting them think that I do.
  • i reason, NOT...we don't have the POWER to Bless anyone..only to for people enemies and friends...just say thank u, humbly and prideless, to believer or non believer.HE sent them..all gifts are from GOD anyway ...if this non believer answered a prayer to God..this was God..not HIm....give thanks and glory to the ONE whom it REALLY belongs....
  • Sure. It is a common expression in the English language. I wouldn't besurprised to find out that amny people who use it don't even know of its origin.
  • I don't know...you KNOW the person doesn't believe....sheesh... ...I guess not, but it sure sounds arrogant as hell. Just SAY it and forget it. If they don't like it, they'll get over it. My friggin' head hurts from this.
  • Sure,,, it might get them to think about him.
  • I say God bless you because that's what I desire for the person. If they choose not to accept the blessing, that's okay with me, but it's not going to stop me from offering it. I think it's about the nicest thing you can say to a person!
  • Sure. It's just like if a person wishes you "Merry Christmas". It's the thought that counts. Just playing devil's advocate, would it be ok if I said, "Goddess bless you"?
  • u should not, since God never bless him
  • sure. not believing there are doctors does not mean that they don't exist. There are blind people who have never seen anything, but that does not mean colors do not exist. There are people who have never eaten veal, but that does not mean it does not exist. The person who does not believe needs a blessing. peace
  • Yes because you do.
  • Yes, but when people do it to prove a point it shows. I remember being in line at some store or other and hearing someone wish the cashier 'Merry Christmas' in a way that could only be described as pugnacious. It made me sad because he had clearly lost the spirit of the thing entirely.
  • I think so, it doesn't offend me - if anything, I appreciate the sentiment. A little different - I have friends, who know I am Athiest - who have said they will pray for me when I was going through a rough patch. That made me feel a little awkward. That is my problem though, not theirs. There is no reason for them not to say it, and again, I appreciated the intent and sentiment.
  • If the intent is to be nice, how could I be offended? I just hope it's the God you're thinking of.
  • I cannot remember the last time I've actually heard someone say, "God Bless You...". Wow, it's been like since I was in grammar school (I'm now 40). Mostly people say "Bless you." I think it's fine...although, I'm a Christian and not an Athiest.
  • I didn't even like that even when I believed in God. Why would God bless you whenever you sneeze?
  • sure it is unless they ask you not to say it? I used to like before I believed.
  • Saying "God bless you" dates back to the time of the Black Death when sneezing meant you were sick and likely to succumb to the plague. It was a way of saying adios and expressing the wish that you didn't go to Hell.
