If they did, they'll have to be able to indicate why they did so, in court, which means they almost assuredly had the right.

The facts here are sketchy, but the basis for arrest, search and seizure is probable cause. The facts of which you may be unaware are the facts or information with which the police were armed prior to your arrest. If those facts establish probable cause, then they did have the right to search your vehicle. Get a good lawyer.
