I don't see how sometimes guitar/bass players can play almost every stringed instraments! How does it work?

Having an ear helps, I think. I can play almost every stringed instrument, but I think it's simply because I started on the violin at a young age. It's supposed to be the hardest. And it has always been my reference point when I'm learning to play something else. Sadly, I would trade all that just to have an "ear" for music.
