Your cat should not go out with only his back claws. A cat can not protect itself very well without its front claws.

I wouldn't let it outside, but I know someone who had a declawed cat that went outside. She managed to catch squirrels with no front claws. I try to keep my cats inside anyway, and they have claws, outside is dangerous, and full of big cars.

No. Your cat needs front claws for defense and climbing. It will need to stay inside. As an added note: please don't declaw your cat!

http://cats.about.com/od/declawing/Declawing_and_Humane_Alternatives.htm Declawing is a violent, invasive, painful, and unnecessary mutilation that involves 10 separate amputations—not just of cats' nails but of their joints as well. Its long-term effects include skin and bladder problems and the gradual weakening of cats' legs, shoulders, and back muscles. Declawing is both painful and traumatic, and it has been outlawed in Germany and other parts of Europe as a form of cruelty. Many veterinarians in the United States refuse to declaw cats, who experience extreme pain when they awaken after surgery and have difficulty walking until their paws heal. Without their claws, cats are virtually defenseless. Some stop using the litterbox. Sensing their vulnerability, some cats become paranoid and develop neuroses. Others who escape the safe confines of home are left completely vulnerable to predators and abusers. Scratching does not cause a problem if cats' nails are trimmed properly. Scratching posts and consistent guidance about where they may scratch also help cats learn not to scratch furniture or other inappropriate items.

All these answers are good and true. Yes, cats do need their front claws to mostly defend themselves from all types of predators. Their claws are their main defense. They would not have much of a chance.

Declawing is extremely painful and cruel. There are many alternatives including special caps you can glue on to the cat's nails to keep them from destroying things. Please don't declaw your cat.
-
How would you feel if I took a pair of rusty pliers and ripped out your fingernails? Would you then want to go outside?
-
These are all good answers. I haven't had her declawed and don't really want to do so. I think it sounds like it would be painful, but I know others who had their cats done and they all swear it is not that bad a recovery for the cat. Thanks to all of your informative answers on this I am definitely not going to have her declawed.

I had my kitten declawed. He never indicated one bit of pain, and didn't bleed AT ALL once I got him home! They didn't even send home pain meds. It was done by laser and was not at all the way some make it sound to be. Recovery was very moderate. Oh and the instruments they used were NOT rusty!

Please don't declaw. It is TORTURE. Plus, your cat will turn into a biter!!!!!
-
no.. he's lost his ability to climb trees, defend himself, etc. I'd keep a declawed cat inside unless you plan to let him roam on the deck or something. My cats are so ingrained to be inside that when I put them on the deck they don't really go anywhere. :)

You guys are such wimps. It's a cat. declawing it is fine. For god's sake we circumcise humans. Now as far as going outside I think if it's every now and then your ok, but I wouldn't put it out permanently or for extended periods of time.

Declawing is cruel and so unnecessary. Cats need their claws for digging, defending themselves and laying scent down. I think it should be outlawed everywhere.
