the advantage is in their minds. its called 'compensation'. its why old guys buy corvettes and guys with tiny penises drive hummers.
-
It's psychological. Few people do things simply for the sake of it. We like to be compensated. And it works. Some might say addictively so. Go figure.
-
No advantage at all. Once you reach Level 43 that is the peak of your rating power. After that there is nothing to aim for.

I couldn't care less about the points. But I like having a gold colored badge. Badges are very important.

Technically the points aren't for the member. They are to give value to the questions or answers, so that the better more helpful answers rise to the top, 0r the more interesting questions are also nearer the top. Getting points might be fun or an incentive to stay on the site, but once you can rise up a few levels and gain the power to give 5-6 points to posts and those reward more good answers, there really isn't anything more they do for you.

I don't care about getting points at all. They mean nothing. A person with a higher ranking does have an advantage in the way that the more amount of points you have, the more points you can give others. However, people with lower ratings are probably not as addicted to this website and are (hopefully) doing something other than being on the Internet all day. Maybe one day I'll be in their shoes. Hopefully one day soon. Yes. I'm getting there, I hope. I need more fresh air. 'Tis one of my goals. I just need to find something to do with my time.

I think it works this way: 1) All users appreciate feedback. Feedback can be given in the form of answers or comments, but also in the form of points. 2) A higher rating means a better (more appreciative) feedback. Lower ratings are less appreciated, if they come for someone who could give more. 3) All users are not equals in rating power. Your rating power grows until it reaches the maximum at Sage level 43. So users like to get points in order to reach that level and give higher feedback. 4) Also, many users like to get higher titles and badges, enter the leaderboard and get higher rankings. 5) As a conclusion, it is more the feedback points that users appreciate that accumulating points. And no, you don't have any advantage with higher rankings and points than the others. It just plays a role in the recognition that you get. 6) Personally, I am not one of the most popular, but I have received a lot of positive feedback from some people (but to be fair, not from all). I care also about getting feedback in the form of points, but I am not really trying to maximize my point amount growth.
