    I looked it up in Wikipedia. I says that 10% of the conscripts between 1943 and 1948 were sent to the coal mines instead of military service. They took their name from Ernest Bevin a British labor leader. An interesting historical tidbit. thanks for askiing schonberg. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bevin_Boys
