Does a NASCAR race team get to choose the number it will paint on the car, or is it assigned to the team by NASCAR?

    The number is picked by owners of the team. Most owners "buy" a number for their exclusive use. It is rumored that Richard Childress still owns the exclusive rights to the #3 in Cup series racing and will not part with it. (Nobody could ever deserve that number)
