Chequers A Beautiful old Mansion. In its present form 16th Century but a house was built in the 11 hundreds. It was once the prison of Lady Mary Grey , the sister of Lady Jane Grey( Queen of England for 9 days) Granddaughter of Henry Vll. .. It was passed down through the female line, one who married John Russell grandson of Oliver Cromwell. It has a large collection of Cromwell memorabilia. The house passed through many families and eventually was the property of Arthur Lee a politician. He gave it to the Nation in 1921. They had previously restored it to its former state of elegance after it had been used as a convalescene home during WW1
