Besides XBOX Live, you can play any XBOX Live Compatible Game or any XBOX System Link game online. The other alternatives are BoxLink and XBoxConnect. There may be others at this time that are/will be available. These you need to register for a free account on the internet. You will install software on your computer. With this software you will find other people either chatting or hosting a sort of chat room with other members located in there playing a specific XBOX game. You join the room, then go to your XBOX and set it up in System Link mode. You will not be playing on the Microsoft servers but another set of servers for use with the software you have installed. Again this is completely free, no monthly or annual subscriptions, works on all XBOX systems altered or not, and allows for XBOX Live AND all System Link games like Tony Hawk 3,4 or 5 to be played online.
