unprofessional is putting it lightly ---- todays customer service centers are not customer friendly

oh yeah I've been there. These days it sucks to be a customer, and sucks to be IN customer service. From experience - a LOT of companies will penalize you as the employee for simply placing someone on hold, though it may be professionally the right thing to do. You try to help but you're danged if you do and danged if you don't. I use the "mute" so at least they don't have to hear what's going on when you're helping someone.
