  • Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII. Henry had a sister, Margaret. Margaret married the Scottish king, and their granddaughter was Mary, who became Queen of Scots (Elizabeth's 2nd cousin). Mary Queen of Scots was executed by her cousin Queen Elizabeth, but she had a son, James. James inherited the crowns of England and Scotland, becoming James I of England and the first English king of the Stuart dynasty. Very convoluted.
  • Elizabeth was the 2nd and last monarch of the house of Tudor upon her death in 1603 the monarchy was passed to the son of her sister Mary(queen of scots)and Henry Stuart, lord Darnley and the house of Stuart took over which stayed in place until 1689.
  • If Henry VIII (her father) had had his way, the Scottish relatives would have been left out of it and the descendants of his other younger sister Mary would have taken over the throne - this is what he requested to happen in his will, and would have meant Lady Anne Stanley becoming queen after Elizabeth. However this was seen to be too much against tradition so the rule of following the line of the first-born above any others prevailed and James VI of Scotland became James I of England, as described by Lyn, and lots of people tried to kill him - the most famous of these attempts was the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 when Guy Fawkes and his friends tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament while James I/VI was opening them.
