How did Huck Finn and Jim hope to reach Cairo IL from Hannibal MO by raft when it is upstream?

My map shows Hannibal, MO about 270 miles North of Cairo, IL. When I last canoed on the Mississippi, the current ran from North to South. I believe that Huck and Jim started from Hannibal, planned to abandon their raft in Cairo, and head up the Ohio River to the Free States, booking passage on a steamboat. Unfortunately, they missed their destination in fog, and were forced to go further down the river, into more and more dangerous territory for a runaway slave.
