  • Yes there is. Banks buy corporate jets while people freeze to death and can't get a decent education or healthcare.
  • Yes, there is. That is awful.
  • Of course there is! This is nothing new, the only difference lately is the gap between the rich and the poor widen as the middle class dissolves.

  • I agree, first of all the power company should be put out of business, and charged with criminal intent. They should not have the option to shut off ones power during winter no matter how far behind they are, even $10,000.What sort of civilized society do we live in to allow such things to happen. The bailout to the fat cats is wrong as well.
  • There are many Marvin Schurs out there. It is only going to get worse. He was most likely to proud to ask for help.
  • It's not America! It's some people who live in America. Look at Citibank, who after receiving their $45 million bailout money bought an expensive little jet plane because they had already ordered it before starting to go bankrupt. Why did they need such a plane? High security reasons they couldn't disclose. I think the public is due transparency. I think Obama will demand this from these comopanies. Don't worry, the public is on top of things! America is still the best place to live! As for the man who froze to death, I see another AB member has given you that information.
  • Absolutely. Corporations have too much sway and the little man is just ignored.
  • I find Mr Schur's death to be very very sad. That is all I can say on the matter.
  • Read this article, if you want justice to be served back Representative Mayes on what he is doing in Congress, enclosed email page. I have already sent my email we need to stick together in such cases and others. MAYES, BARCIA DEMAND ANSWERS ABOUT DEATH OF BAY CITY RESIDENT 93-YEAR-OLD WORLD WAR II VETERAN FROZE TO DEATH INSIDE HIS HOME — January 27, 2009 LANSING – State Representative Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City) and State Senator Jim Barcia (D-Bay City) today called for a review of the tragic death of Marvin E. Schur, a 93-year-old World War II veteran, who froze to death in his Bay City home after Bay City Electric Light & Power placed a device on his home to limit his electric use. "I am shocked and saddened by this tragedy," said Mayes, Chair of the House Energy and Technology Committee. "Though we're still getting more information, what's clear is that this man's death was entirely preventable. Until we understand this unfortunate situation, we need a moratorium on all electric shut-offs as well as the use of these limiting devices, in order to ensure that this does not happen again." Schur, who owed more than $1,000 to Bay City Electric Light and Power, had a limiter device placed on his home on January 13 to restrict the amount of electricity that the home can use. If the homeowner uses too much electricity, the device shuts off all power to the home, and needs to be reset. City officials believe that nobody explained the device's operation to Schur, who tripped the device and did not reset it. Schur's body was found January 17. Mayes has called for a review by the Michigan Public Service Commission to review city shut-off policies and offer recommendations to Bay City in order to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Additionally, Mayes is calling for a subcommittee in the House of Representatives to review policies and make additional recommendations. Mayes is also drafting legislation to protect vulnerable citizens like seniors and the people with disabilities during the winter months. Mayes is working in the House and Senate that not only would restrict power shutoff between November and April, but also would ban the use of limiter devices until strict criteria are met that would protect the safety of homeowners. • boycott, protest, rally, oh wait my shows starting.
  • If this is the story I read, didn't this man have the money for his bill on the kitchen table? He wasn't able to go outside to flip the switch on the limiter to restore the power. I wish family members and/or neighbors realized how much we need to help our elderly citizens. Here in Wisconsin the power companies cannot turn off the power during the winter. And, whenever we experience extreme cold, all the news outlets are recommending that elderly family members or neighbors get checked on. Doing so is the right thing to do.......
  • thats the "government " , not the people...the people would not "bail" them out ,especially with their own hard earned money!! the government is the problem OF THE PEOPLE>>>and only the PEOPLES can "bail out"...the GOVERNMENT is WRONG IN AMERICA.....and only the AMERICAN"S can RIGHT the WRONG....:)
  • Just starting to figure that out, are we? This Nation has been in deep trouble for decades. In a way I'm glad we have Obama now. He just might have the courage and decency to bury the rotting corpse of the Nation I was born to.
