The free spirit. Charm goes a long way, much longer even than conscientiousness. It is not enough to play by the rules these days; now we all have to be flashy American Idol contestants in order to be professionally successful.

for the most part, the straight laced people make things easier on themselves but not getting into bad situations. hence the old saying "forbidden fruits make many jams"

I think the free spirit has it easier. To be straight laced and play by the rules means you have rules you adhere to and rules are control and control limits your life, your freedom and ultimately your happiness...the free spirit type isn't bothered by these things and in the end is unaffected by them, meaning they have less worries or cares to weigh them down.

The straight laced person, as life is run on rules and regulations, so the free spirit will find it harder to conform to society.

I found that the stickler for rules tends to be more stressed by situations beyond their control; therefore, less happy. Part of that comes from a false expectation that if they play by the rules, every one else should. Usually these types of persons are classed type 'A' personalities, if not because of aggressiveness, then because of their stress levels and worries. The free spirit tends not to worry as much. They tend to take things as they come with a sense of humor, and seem better able to laugh at themselves and the follibles of mankind. Their stress levels tend to be lower overall, despite the situations they find themselves in, if for no other reason than their perception of the situations isn't as grave and serious. These are typically classed type 'B' personalities due to their low stress levels and levels of worry. Having been a "Triple A" who learned to be a "Double B", I'm sorta familiar with both sides.

Interesting. You got a pretty even split of votes for the straight laced and for the free spirits. Reading what each camp had to say, they both seem right. In fact, I think they are both right. Given a stable, orderly society and conditions that are predictable, the straight laced are going to do better than the free spirits. But in times of great stress and constant change, free spirits are much better equipped to chart a safe coruse and not collapse under the stress.

Free spirit--for all the great reasons the previous ABers have given!
