  • It depends on several things. Namely, the thickness of the paint. If you use a lot of paint in one stroke, it will take longer. If you use really thinned out strokes, it will only take a couple hours. I had a friend who liked to imitate Van Gogh (thick, deep strokes, caked with paint) and after a month the inner layers of her canvases were still not dry. You can use different solvents to make it dry slower or faster. My favorite is Liquin. Use it like you would water with acrylics. It thins it and makes it dry quicker. Its great for creating transparencies and blending colors together on the canvas, rather than on your palette.
  • Also remember certain pigments like certain reds take longer to dry than other pigments. Alkyds(resin-based oil paints)all dry at the same rate and they dry within 48 hours or so. I don't think the pigmentation is as high as oil paints though. The colors are somewhat limited, too.
