A solar panel capable of delivering enough electricity to match that of an average household outlet costs thousands of dollars. Why is it so expensive and is there any indication that would lead one to assume that it may one day come down in price?

A solar cell is a piece of precision engineering from extremely high purity silicon which, for the more efficient ones, must be a single crystal. It basically made using the same technology as the chips in a computer. However, prices are falling steadily, and there is reason to hope that powering a household on them will be economical in about 10 years time.

They have constantly came down in price since I installed mine. I have 2 300 watt panels on top of my roof, they are about 6ft by 3ft. The most expensive parts however were the inverters and the batteries. It provides almost enough power to run the air conditioning all summer. The system cost me just over 14k with installation. It will finish paying for itself in 2 more years.

The problem is that most households use power in the evenings when solar power is not as practical. Solar is more useful and economical in scales used by industry and commerical applications. . The best use of solar is to reduce the peak demand for other types of power generation.
