Supporting a loved one in a destructive habit can be an emotional splinter. Giving a child up for adoption because you know you can't raise them would be an emotional splinter. Being a current victim of abuse by a loved one would be an emotional splinter. Some splinters aren't just splinters; they leave gashes. More like a knife through the heart.
