  • Unlike brake pads, you can buy relined brake shoes to save money over brand new ones. Be sure to return the old shoes as cores. Just as you would on brake rotors, turn or replace the drums. Rebuild or replace the wheel cylinders. If you don't, you can expect them to leak before the new shoes wear out. Work on one side at a time so you have the other as a model. Use a bit of high temperature lube on the shoe contact points. A Vicegrip needle nose plier would come in handy to handle the return springs. Replace any questionable parts. Remember good brakes can save you life, so don't be too cheap with brake parts.
