He has the power to get away with it. His basilica looks like a mansion. Do you think Jesus would have a huge mansion to rule over his people with, I actually think he said rich men can't get into heaven lol.
The Pope must wear the attire that will befit his stature.
Cost of the attire is not material relevance here.
Decorum is of greater significance.
And decorum must be maintained regardless the expenses.
it's a traditional adornment
The Catholic Church is a powerful and wealthy organization. The Pope needs to have a lot of "pomp".
What? You want the religious leader of 700 million people to wear cheap gear from Tesco?
Probably because his holyness can't be seen sporting combats and a baseball cap.
The Catholic church is rich and he doesn't have to pay for it... Kind of like the president
If you want to be the highest of your church, your status and everything about it has to become unobtainable. The more expensive, the better.
Because the Catholic church is so rich it needs to spend it's money on something besides helping the poor.
Thats a good question. It go's against what Jesus said. "to humble yourself".
All for show and to look important. Very very sad. It does not impress me. People are starving in Rome, going through rubbish bins looking for food and the pope sits in his expensive robes and hats in a gold lined vatican. What must Jesus think?
"For what ever you do unto your brother you do unto me".
What does the pope wear to sleep?

The Pope is on my shit list so that I can feel better. I did ask a question here on how much of the Vaticans earnings does it donate to charity. I'm thinking none and I maybe wrong, but it hasn't been answered yet for some reason.

I forgot which one it was, but when some catholic priest started molesting a boy and was caught, didn't the church just pay out some millions of dollars in settlements?
by Blackberry. on January 25th, 2009
Yep. That's right.
by Zack on January 25th, 2009
It's just too self explanatory, I just looked, apparently about 600Million has been giving out in settlements, where was all that money when charity needed it lol.
