Chilling the onion for a bit before you chop it helps to make the sulphur compounds less likely to come out of the onion, as they are less volatile when cool. It works for me, and if I leave an onion out and then cut it, tears without fail.
-
Run it under cold water (after removing the skin). This helps dissolve some of the sulphurous gases.
-
Chew gum while you peel the onions.
-
With an onion Chopper but peel them under running water
-
Run it under cold water. Don't ask me why it works, it just does.
-
wear goggles
-
It helps if you cut it with the skin of the onion still attached.
-
Put a small piece of bread in your mouth and letting a small piece hang out will absorb the juices while your slicing it - I'm really serious it works
-
I wear my swimming goggles. serious! I have a pair of those small swimming goggles and very sensitive blue eyes ... when I chop I wear, they work a treat.
-
Whistle whilst chopping them
-
I've heard actually cutting them like Under Water, like in a pan full of water, works, i'm not 100% though... Trial and error!
-
I wear contacts and glasses, I found that when I wear my contacts it doesn't make me cry at all.

You don't have to hold the onion under running water, but have the water running while you cut it and it will keep your eyes from tearing up. Also, to remove the smell off your hands rub your hands with stainless steel (the sink or something else) and the smell will be gone. Or you can use lemon juice too.
-
chew gum while you do it. not kidding
-
I normally cut mine in a sink of cold water,iv also held a slice of bread in my mouth while cutting the onion this works also :)
-
Cutting the onion underwater works. Also, light a match, blow it out and hold it in your mouth (burnt portion out of your mouth) works as well.
-
You can put a cracker or small piece of bread in your mouth hanging out a little and that will absorb the juices - For Real it works
