  • I think that when they stopped teachers disciplining children it was the beginning of the end for education and society as our parents had known it. So many children just ignore teachers, play truant or are disruptive and the teachers have no recourse to any method of discipline. I do not know if the cane is the answer but something is required
  • I am OK with candy canes. Beating kids in school is not a very good idea.
  • I'm not a fan of the whole hitting kids at school idea. A good teacher can control a class without resorting to violence
  • There'd be a lot of kids that couldn't sit down for a week. I doubt it would happen though. Funny really, my Mom is from the UK and she still has that bamboo cane hanging in the kitchen within easy reach. I know I'll take a AB beating for this, but yes, I think it ought to be re instated under conditions that it's applied with fairness and for serious infractions. Suspensions to many kids, are just holidays, almost a reward. I know that's what I thought of them, but I absolutely dreaded the strap.
  • I agree with Firebrand,, kids have lost respect for the teachers and think they can do whatever they want now days. Fortunately, there are still parents that use corporal punishment at home to teach respect and dicipline and those lessons carry to school, but some parents have no dicipline at home and no control over their kids and the teachers have to deal with it. I am not sure I would advocate the use of a cane, but our Dad used a belt on us, within reason, and it didnt hurt us except at the time. But we respected and loved him very much. I think it is a good idea if possible to bring it back.
  • If a teacher laid a hand on my child I would be on them so fast. I was responsible for the discipline of my child. No, I did not use corporal punishment in any way. My son was very respectful to his teachers and the other pupils, he was never in trouble and the only time we had any problems was when children from homes where they were physically disciplined bullied my child.
  • what kind of cane?
  • I support corporal punishment 100 percent and would not mind the teachers punishing my kids if they became disrespectfull or out of line.
  • There would probably be a lot less discipline problems
  • I think it would be a good idea. All the "problem" kids and young adults have been educated through the education system where the "cane" was no longer in use. But the older generations like my parents for example, who grew up with the cane in schools, are good people, who respect authority, and are a valuable contribution to our society... well most of the older generation anyways. Teachers now have no power, and neither do parents. No body can physically lay a hand on a child without calling it abuse.... I think we had good intentions in the begining, I mean hitting children doesnt really sound like a good idea.... but we went too far, and now we are suffering the backlash.
  • Having suffered through a third-grade teacher who mentally abused me (and was similarly godawful to my sister), I think putting deadly weapons in the hands of teachers so that they can be Judge, Jury and Executioner on all matters of discipline is a truly STUPID idea. And if you think it's such a good idea, why not allow bosses at work to do it? Or ushers at movie theaters? Or, heck, let's just do away with the criminal justice system and let cops do a "Rodney King" on anyone they suspect of wrongdoing? I don't see any logical contradiction between 'bringing back the cane' and the other similar 'modest proposals' above... . . .
  • I think a few teachers would get hurt. If it's really true that the kids are out of control (and, having worked as a high school teacher I don't buy that) then they aren't going to respond positively to getting hit by the teacher. And that's before you add in older siblings and parents.
  • I was a good child and I was taught to be respectful. in the first grade, without reason, the teacher hit me and three other children that she targeted. She caused me to be afraid of teachers. I could never learn in a classroom setting. I became a self-taught person. I was fortunate that I had learned to read in kindergarden. Being able to read allowed me to stay away from teachers as much as possible. If they brought back the rod, there will be many dead educators because many parents will not allow anyone to hit their children. I wouldn't! - Respect and obedience should be taught at home lovingly. I do believe that the law should hold parents accountable who don't show an earnest effort to teach their children to be well-mannered.I'm 62 yrs.old
  • It would take more than the cane. Society would have to be a huge cane. It couldn't just be in the classroom.
