This is an example of art pieces made in layers, what I don't understand is what you mean by "of function". I never made it to 100 layers but between lacquer layers I attached mother pearl. This is how I do it: The lacquer is applied to the substructure in very thin layers, and after each layer cures in a humid, dust-free cabinet for a day or longer, it is then polished and another layer is applied; an object may have only a few or more than a hundred layers, progressing to a very refined final lacquer surface. The lacquer may be used in a transparent state, as a "varnish" over bare wood, or it may be opaque and colored by the addition of mineral pigments. Cinnabar and iron oxide were used to make red and black lacquers, orpiment for yellow lacquer. Until the development of synthetic colors, white, blue and green were not used, as these natural pigments are unstable in lacquer. Oils and other ingredients were added as dictated by various recipes; these are sometimes blamed for a lacquer which peels, lacks a uniform color, or performs poorly in some other way. In a technique called dry lacquer, used to make religious statues, fabric saturated with lacquer is molded or modeled-- somewhat like papier mache -- over a wood or clay core. Once the latter is removed, the resulting sculpture is hollow, with perhaps a wood frame or armature added for strength.

The first two are finished and three + four I am still working with. The ones finished are hand carved in wood, the whites are in mother pearl and both are covered with 15 layers of opaque lacquer. The other two I am still wondering how to finish them. I have started to hand paint the furniture piece but I am still missing 10 very thin lacquer layers. The little girl that is crying I still don't have a clue how I will finish it, I have only given it a base coat and have to wait till I am working with it and then I will know what to do, ideas are welcomed.

It can have as many or as few as the artist arms it with. Though not all functions are desirable. A decorative or a blatanly commercial function is scowled upon by many artists. Something practical yet inbued with design - e.g a chair - serves many different and varied functions.
