That is a similar problem to what Luke and Lea faced when Han was frozen in Carbonite. They had to sneak into Jabba's Palace after strategically placing comrades incognito. It was pretty risky and almost didn't work but they were able to pull it off at the end. I suggest you write a letter. The power of the pen is often overlooked in high stress situations. -Or- You may just have to reinstall your operating system and then get online to retrive your data. Don't forget your password.

First install the new hard drive. Then get your computer recovery disk, if you have one, and run a full recovery to factory default. If you do not have a recovery disk, you will need an operating system installation disk. Since you have an HP, it is probable that you are running Windows, and for antivirus / software support reasons, you will want buy/find and install XP Service Pack 2 or 3; or Windows Vista. (You can also install XP SP2, and go online later to get a loonngg download and update to SP3 at Microsoft's website) The MS Windows XP/Vista installation includes a version of Internet Explorer. Use this to 'browse' the internet and download any special hardware drivers you need, and to perform all the updates to Windows and IE, and to get your antivirus installed and updated, etc. If you wish, you *may* be able to put the old drive in as a 2nd drive to attempt data recovery, depending upon your current configuration (can it hold an additional drive?). I've done this for customers who had failing drives; sometimes, if you are lucky, you can grab the data off the old drive before it dies completely. Good luck.
