Inauguration festivities are traditional. If we abandon them the terrorists win.

Pomp and circumstance matter much more than logic would indicate. We need such occasions to see how our country is great. To underscore that something have changed, and to impress other countries. In my country we still have royalty even though our government is 99.9% democratic (The king can hold back a new law for ca 1 week before being overruled by a second vote). But they are good for exports and state visits, they hand out the occational medal and unite us and so we pay the royal family several million each year, just to be royal ;-)) It is a good investment. regards JakobA

Like spending money on keeping music, art and sports i schools?! Or housing the millions of homeless some of which are veterns of the Armed forces?! or maybe even putting some of it back into the population to try and get out of this economic downfall we're in?! Of course, but we all now that's not going to happen anytime soon..

In consideration for our economy and the huge deficit we're in, I would probably have chosen to scale back the ceremonies somewhat. Not do away with them, but just downsize a bit, as most people are right now, trying to make ends meet.

I don't think anyone had a choice in the matter. Considering how much hype everyone put into the whole election, regardless of who won, it had to be as big as it was or else I think much of the people who had just recently become interested in what was actually going on again might once again be turned away.

yes, I think that every time i see a celebrity wearing several thousand dollar accessories or clothing. Instead of those cute pumps you could have bought a similar pair of equal cuteness for less than 100 or even a couple hundred and used that several thousand for a real cause.
