i don't know how cheap you want to go, but here are my thoughts. if you just want it to go fast, this is the cheapest route: remove weight. strip everything out of it you can, without making it illegal to drive. but if you want more power, you'll need some cash. the biggest killer of horsepower is friction. you lose more horsepower inside the engine and the drivetrain than you can gain through any cheap method. use high quality oil. replace the valve rockers with roller rockers, if you can. make sure none of the accessories on the belt are dragging too much. they might need to be replaced if their bearings are getting worn. if it's possible, buy a shorter belt and cut out an accessory from the belt drive (air conditioning is big) but be very careful not to take out anything important (alternator, water pump!!) next stop for power is intake and exhaust. make sure the engine can breathe properly. you may want a larger intake/exhaust pipe, but remember, size isn't everything. make sure that there are no sharp edges or rough surfaces inside the intake and exhaust that will slow down or disturb the smooth flow of air. but intake and exhaust alone won't boost performance, they simply give you the potential to boost performance. high flow air filter and high flow exhaust will help. next stop for power: the efficiency of the engine vs. how much fuel it can burn. you can't simply put more fuel in the chambers and gain power. when an engine burns at the perfect mixture, that's when it's getting the most power. put in better spark plugs. the multi-point sparks are worthless. electricity always takes the shortest path, so it's easy for a 4 point spark to turn into a 1 point spark. just get something platinum. high conductivity. that will start helping it burn more fuel. the only way to get it to burn more fuel is to combine increased fuel input with a better spark and more airflow. some racing stores sell drivetrain computers that can reprogram the fuel injection system to deliver a little more fuel, and reprogram the distributor to give a longer spark. this usually helps. after that, we start to get into more expensive and involved mods, like turbos, cams, etc. if you want it to accelerate better without a gain in power, transmission is a good place to start. the drivetrain computer i mentioned above can also usually reprogram the shift points of the transmission, so you can customize it for best acceleration. besides that, make sure it's running on clean, high quality transmission fluid and a new filter. after that, you start getting more expensive. shift kits, new transmission components, etc. but in the end, anything you can do to get the engine to take in more fuel and air (and it needs to take more of both) will increase power.
