There are a number of reasons. First, pay to play games are typically higher quality because they can afford to hire more designers/programmers and buy greater server resources. This is not always true, but as a general rule, it usually applies. Second, they don't have to put up with as much idiocy. If you have to buy a game and a subscription to play, at least in theory you have made some commitment to enjoying the game. If just anyone can wander in at any time, some people will do so just to annoy the people actually playing the game. Third, many 'free' games install spyware, sign you up for spam, force you to watch ads before or during play or are otherwise annoying in their quest to make a buck.

Its fun. And They usally don't cost that much. World of Warcraft is only like 15 bucks a month. I play it all the time.
