The Sun is a low mass star and so will never have the core fusion reactions of massive stars. Yet, the Sun has iron in its atmosphere, as well as gold, silver and other elements much heavier than iron. Why?

This is because our sun is a second-generation star (at least) meaning a lot of the matter it contains is of remnants of previous stars which were massive enough to fuse the heavier elements you're asking about.

The sun, like the earth, were made from a dust cloud contaminated by the ejecta from earlier stars which burned much hotter and went supernova, flinging heavy elements out into space, The iron, gold etc. in the sun has exactly the same as that on earth.
